2 ADWENT Rozpoczyna się na cztery tygodnie przed Świętami Bożego Narodzenia. W tym czasie ustawiane są w kościołach wieńce adwentowe z czterema świecami - każdą z nich zapalamy z nadejściem kolejnej niedzieli. Ubieramy także szopki przedstawiające wnętrze betlejemskiej stajenki w noc narodzenia Pana Jezusa. ADVENT It begins four weeks before Christmas. During this time Advent wreaths with four candles are put up in churches. Each of the candle is lit when the next Sunday comes. We also put up symbolic cribs in churches. They show the place where Jesus Christ was born.

3 SYMBOLE I ZWYCZAJE ADWENTU Świeca roratnia (roratka) – jest ona symbolem Najświętszej Marii Panny, która niesie ludziom Chrystusa. Świeca ta jest zapalana w kościołach podczas porannych mszy (roraty) odprawianych w okresie adwentu. Kalendarz adwentowy – specjalny kalendarz służący do odliczania dni od pierwszego dnia adwentu do Wigilii Bożego Narodzenia. Lampion adwentowy – jest to rodzaj lampki, wykonanej w kształcie czworoboku zamkniętego, którego ścianki przypominają gotyckie witraże z symbolami chrześcijańskimi lub scenami biblijnymi. Idąc na roraty dzieci zabierają je ze sobą – oświetlają sobie drogę w ciemności. SYMBOLS OF ADVENT Advent candle - it is a symbol of the Virgin Mary, who brings Christ to people. This candle is lit in churches during morning masses in Advent time. The masses are called Roraty. Advent calendar - a special calendar used for counting days from the first day of Advent to Christmas Eve. Advent lantern- it is a kind of lamp in a shape of quadrilateral with Christian symbols and The Bible scenes on it. Childern take it when they go to Roraty mass to lightup the way in the darkness.

5 6 GRUDNIA - MIKOŁAJKI 6 GRUDNIA - MIKOŁAJKI Szóstego grudnia św. Mikołaj do nas przychodzi i obdarowywuje nas symbolicznymi prezentami. W szkołach zazwyczaj losujemy wzajemnie osoby, dla których stajemy się „Mikołajami”. 6th December - Santa Claus Day On 6th December Santa Claus comes and gives us symbolic gifts. "Santas" are usually our parents or other adult relatives. In schools we usually become "Santas" for one another – we prepare small gifts for a classmate whose name we've drawn.

6 24 GRUDNIA-WIGILIA W wieczór wigilijny wszyscy zasiadamy do świątecznego stołu i łamiąc sie opłatkiem składamy świąteczne życzenia. Wedle tradycji na stole ma się znaleźć 12 potraw i jedno dodatkowe nakrycie dla 'wędrowca'. Po uroczystej wieczerzy wspólnie śpiewamy kolędy. 24 th December – Christmas Eve On Christmas Eve, when the first star appear in the sky we gather at the table. We share a wafer and say Christmas greetings to our family. According to our traditions there are 12 dishes on the table and there's one extra cover for a 'stranger'. After a solemn supper we sing Christmas carols.

8 CHOINKA Choinkę ubieramy w dzień Wigilijny, lub 23 grudnia. Zazwyczaj pod nią 24 grudnia znajdujemy symboliczne prezenty. CHRISTMAS TREE Christmas tree is decorated on 23rd or 24th December. We usually find symbolic gifts under the Christmas tree. Presents are shared on 24 th December after the Christmas Eve supper.

9 PASTERKA PO SKOŃCZENIU WIGILII IDZIEMY DO KOŚCIOŁA. JEST WTEDY UROCZYSTA MSZA ZWANA PASTERKĄ. OBCHODZONA JEST O PÓŁNOCY MIĘDZY 24 A 25 GRUDNIA. PODCZAS TEJ MSZY LUDZIE ŚPIEWAJĄ TRADYCYJNE KOLĘDY. Midnight Mass When Christmas Eve supper is finished we go to church. There is aspecial solemn mass called Pasterka. It is celebrated at midnight between 24 th and 25 th December. During this mass people sing traditional Christmas carols.

10 25 i 26 GRUDNIA Są to dni, które spędzamy wspólnie z rodziną. Czas poświęcamy na wspólne kolędowanie oraz na odwiedziny i rozmowy, na które nie ma czasu w ciągu roku. 25 th and 26 th December Christmas Day (25 th December) is spent with the family at home. There's no cleaning and cooking that day. 26 th December is a day for visiting and exchanging Christmas greeting. We meet our relatives, talk, sing carols and enjoy Christmas time.
