CLEAN and ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGIES Organization: TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF LODZ Address Ul. B. Stefanowskiego 18/22 90 924, LODZ POLSKA Region: LODZKIE M. Lodz Organization Type: University CLEAN and ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGIES VIRTUAL PLATFORM Road Map - II Version
S&T INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGIES WORLDWIDE S&T INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION on CLEAN MANUFACTURING and ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGIES
RATIONALE EU should play an active role in the innovation and application of clean and sustainable processes for exploiting planetary resources and producing green materials and products. S&T International cooperation is needed in this area to help increase the competitiveness of the European Industry and to help reduce the world industrial footprint on the environment. Int. cooperation should target East and South East Asia: advanced countries (Japan and Korea) and emerging countries (China and Vietnam) where new markets are increasing rapidly.
REQUIREMENTS FOR A SUSTAINABLE PROCESS AND MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY The Factory of the Future will require consistent transformations of the industrial processes to became more “environmentally friendly” (eco-factory). These transformations will consist in less use of water and natural resources, in energy saving processes making large use of renewable sources, in eliminating hazardous substances, in eco-design and optimal use of LCA (Life Cycle Assessement) of processes and products.
Next generation production processes must be flexible and zero waste, based on a more understanding of the materials, of the interaction between process and environment, of product life cycle and recyclability. Next generation processes must be highly intelligent - capable of auto-analysing and adjusting production parameters by process intensification - incorporating gas emission and liquid effluent control and treatments - water recycling and by product minimisation.
The EU process and manufacturing industry will lead (by the pressure of the public opinion, by the constraints coming from regulations, by the development of clean technologies) in application of new environmentally sustainable methods for producing and managing the total life cycle of the products. The market will reward high quality, low cost, energy and eco efficient products with the lowest industrial impact on the environment.
EU VISION Competition only based on cost is unsustainable. Next generation Process and Manufacturing Industry, need to fulfil more stringent environmental requirements. EU leading this trend, will become more competitive at the world level. Developing and implementing Clean Technologies outside Europe will help European Competitiveness and reduce the world industrial impact on the environment.
sustainable manufacturing by clean processes application, STRATEGY Establishing a S&T Int. Coop. with advanced (Japan, Korea) and emerging economies (China, India, Vietnam) on common strategies for: Sustainable mining and process industries by less energy-intensive and clean technologies application, sustainable manufacturing by clean processes application, eco-design and life cycle analysis, standardisation of Env. Impact assessment criteria market assessment in order to enter and succeed in emerging markets for cleaner production sector.
GOALS Protect EU Manufacturing system. Protect global environment Open new markets for exporting clean technologies and processes. .
Reducing resources consumption Retain workplaces in EU area Prevent environmental tourism of polluting industries Reduce non efficient production (and costs linked to it) Reduce/avoid costs linked to environmental pollution from production Harmonisation of environmental practices, impact assessment methods, production methods Developing and encouraging the application of clean technologies Promoting technology and environmental practices transfer Reducing polluting emissions on the global scale Reducing resources consumption
S & T priorities for the CET Int Coop strategy Reduction of GHG production in energy intensive processes (cement, metal, ceramic industries) by energy-efficient technologies. Resource and material saving technologies Reduction of Water consumption by less intensive water request technologies and increase quality and recyclability by point-source treatments. Definition of methodological approach to Eco-product design Definition of common criteria for LCA Standardisation of Env. impact assessment
Action plan for Int. Coop Propose new clean tech-related initiatives in multilateral organisations (by workshops and focused meetings) promote the integration of sustainable processing and manufacturing development into countries’ strategies and plans ( by technical documents and newsletters) promote cooperation between scientific and civil society actors (by research projects and conferences) increase awareness of responsibility for operating in accordance with the principles of sustainable development (by promoting multilateral agreements)
Competence- and capacity-building Increase partner countries’ capacity to view environmental concerns in a long-term perspective and fulfil their international obligations; support international competence and capacity-building as regards implementation of multilateral clean-production agreements; support institutional cooperation as an important element in competence-building; promote environmental technical cooperation and capacity building by supporting research and education
Research institutions and centres of expertise coop A high level of technical expertise is necessary to ensure that the cooperation on clean technologies and sustainable manufacturing maintains high standards. S & T knowledge and expertise must be used actively to enable partners to analyse, monitor and deal with their problems related the clean technologies and sustainable manufacturing
