1 Wstęp do geofizycznej dynamiki płynów. Semestr VI. Wykład 7 8.04.2004
Prof. Stanisław Massel

2 Wykład 7: ruch laminarny i turbulentny (1)
For slow motion of highly viscous fluids, the “layers” of fluids slide smoothly one another with all particles moving in a orderly fashion. Flow when all fluid particles move very nearly parallel to each other is termed laminar flow

4 Wykład 7: ruch laminarny i turbulentny (3)

5 Wykład 7: ruch laminarny i turbulentny (4)
Small-scale chaotic motion of fluid are known as turbulence. The changeover between laminar and turbulent flow is called the transition to turbulence. Turbulence is essentially a statistical phenomenon. Description of the overall motion in turbulent flows should not be presumed to describe the paths of individual particles.

6 Wykład 7: ruch laminarny i turbulentny (5)
In turbulent flow it is not only momentum that is transferred across the flow but similarly actual mass moves in directions other than that of the overall flow. The intensity of the momentum and mass exchange, or intensity of turbulence, is measured by the turbulent viscosity coefficient, analogous to the molecular viscosity .

7 Wykład 7: ruch laminarny i turbulentny (6)
The process of exchange of momentum and energy in turbulent motion is a cascade from large structures (edies) through increasingly smaller structures until energy is ultimately dissipated as heat by the action of viscosity. Monin i Yaglom(1971), Ozmidow(1986)

12 Wykład 7: ruch laminarny i turbulentny (11)
The value of Re indicates the character of flow as being either under inertial or viscous forces. For low Reynolds numbers, flow is controlled by viscous forces, eddies are almost absent, strongly suppressed by viscosity. High Reynolds numbers favour turbulence with vortices of various dimensions.

13 Wykład 7: ruch laminarny i turbulentny (12)

14 Wykład 7: ruch laminarny i turbulentny (13)
Turbulence is essentially a statistical phenomenon. Description of the overall motion in turbulent flows should not be presumed to describe the paths of individual particles in a deterministic way. In oceanographic practice it is not always necessary to known the exact structure of the flow.
