Andrzej Wajda was born on March 6, 1926 in Suwalki He comes from a family of a professional military - James and Angela, a teacher. He grew up in cities where his father was stationed: Suwalki and Radom.
His father, a captain, took part in the September Campaign, was taken prisoner by the Soviets and was the victim of the Katyn massacre. In the summer of 1939 Andrzej Wajda tried without success to get the Corps of Cadets in Lviv. During the war, he attended clandestine classes in Radom, and began to study painting.
According to his own memories of war, he spent it with his father's brothers and sisters at home in Krakow, where he received some teaching of painting. After the war, in the years he studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, and then directing at the Lodz Film School. He graduated in 1953, and received his degree in 1960.
He debuted in the profession alongside Alexander Ford in the film Five Boys from Barska Street. His first independent film was A Generation in From he was the team leader of film team "X", and from 1978 to 1983 he was president of the Polish Filmmakers Association.
In 1956 Wajda directed Kanal. The film tells about soldiers that took part in the Warsaw Uprising.
He also made Ashes and Diamonds in That movie depicts the life of a young man who is trying to live in the occupied world.
His next big work is Man of Marble released in 1967 with Jerzy Radziwilowicz, Krystyna Janda and Tadeusz Lomnicki as main actors.
In 1989 he joins the Cinematography Committee. He is also a member of the Film Academy Award Felixy
He was also one of the three founders of Agora SA, the publisher of Gazeta Wyborcza. In 1994 he founded the Museum of Japanese Art and Technology Manggha in Krakow. Since 1997, a foreign member of the Institut de France - Académie des Beaux-Arts. In 2002 he founded the Master School of Film by Andrzej Wajda.
Since 2001 he has been on the board of the Jan Nowak-Jeziorański College of Eastern Europe and since 2006 a board member of the National Creativity Center Foundation.
At the beginning of the 1980s Andrzej Wajda became more engaged in active political activities. On August he appeared at the Gdansk shipyard, became a member of the Advisory Committee of Solidarity, and in 1989 the Lech Walesa Civic Committee.
In he held the mandate of the first term senator from the province of Suwalki on behalf of KO. During the term of the OKP he went to the Democratic Union.
He is regarded as a leading representative of Polish cinema and one of the founders of the Polish film school. Andrzej Wajda's artistic creation is an original cinema with a large variety, which derives from painting and literature, Polish and European cultural tradition.
He created many film adaptations of literary works and paintings dealing with contemporary issues, as well as intimate psychological dramas.
Andrzej Wajda was married four times, including an actress Beata Tyszkiewicz, with whom he has a daughter Caroline. He is currently married to Krystyna Zachwatowicz, a theatrical and film set designer, costume designer and also an actress.
