12 THE MAP OF MALTA

13 THE REPUBLIC OF MALTA an island country consisting of an archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea, lies 80 km south of Italy, 284 km east of Tunisia, covers over 316 km 2, with a population of just under 450,000, making it one of the world's smallest and most densely populated countries, the capital of Malta is Valletta, which is the smallest national capital in the EU, two official languages: Maltese and English.

14 THE CAPITAL CITY - VALLETTA Founded in 1565 by the Order of St John as a refuge for soldiers returning from the Crusades, Valletta is now the capital of Malta and a piece of living history. With a collection of original baroque architecture, fortified city walls overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, and the spectacular Cathedral of St John, which has a famed painting by Caravaggio, it is no wonder that this smallest of European capital cities is a world heritage site.
