Jerzy Stuhr rose to fame in Poland in the 1970s as an actor in the theatre. As his reputation expanded he diversified into film acting, most memorably in the films of Krzysztof Kieslowski, and theatre direction, notably the Ludowy Teatr in Krakow. His debut as a film director came in 1995, with the film Spis cudzoloznic (List of Adulteresses, 1995) and his second film, Historie milosne (Love Stories, 1997), became an international success. Tydzien z zycia mezczyzny (A Week in the Life of a Man, 1999), his third feature, was premiered at the Years of Film festival in Kazimierz Dolny (Poland), at which he spoke to the press. Highlights of his thoughts on the making of his latest film are reprinted here.

Actor and director of theatre and cinema, professor and rector (1990-1996) of the National Academy of Theatre in Krakow. He debuted in the Folk Theatre in Nowa Huta. He is a character actor collaborating with the STU Theatre in Krakow, and since 1972 with the Old Theatre, where he performed, among others, in the famous staging of Adam Mickiewicz's FOREFATHERS' DAY by Konrad Swinarski. He participated in outstanding stagings by Andrzej Wajda, he played Wierchowienski in Fiodor Dostoyevsky's DEVILS, and with Jerzy Radziwillowicz in THE CRIME AND THE PUNISHMENT in the role of detective Porfiry. In the 1970s, Jerzy Jarocki, Andrzej Wajda and Krzysztof Kieslowski trained him as an assistant.Andrzej WajdaJerzy Jarocki

In the 1990s, in the theatre in Nowa Huta he headed, Stuhr made his first attempts to staging. He directed dramas by Witold Gombrowicz (YVONNE, PRINCESS OF BURGUNDY), Janusz Glowacki (FORTYNBRAS GOT DRUNK) and Moliere (BOURGEOIS NOBELMAN). His greatest theatrical success in terms of attendance was Patrick Süskind's DOUBLE-BASS PLAYER from 1985, which was presented over 800 times all around Poland.Witold Gombrowicz

The film career of Jerzy Stuhr is most influenced by his collaboration with Krzysztof Kieslowski over the film THE AMATEUR (1979), where he played a young and naive man, gradually gaining consciousness of the mechanisms of reality. Before THE AMATEUR Stuhr played in Feliks Falk's THE DANCE LEADER, and afterwards it was time for films using the actor's comical potential: SEXMISSION and KINGSAJZ by Juliusz Machulski. His own film directions: LOVE STORIES, THE LIST OF ADULTERESSES based on the prose by Jerzy Pilch, or THE BIG ANIMAL based on a script by Krzysztof Kieslowski, have a different atmosphere than the films he played in. Stuhr as a director creates a world, which may be funny or sad, but which is always gentle, it lacks a note of irony and Stuhr lacks the temper of a critic of contemporary reality and society.

1994 - 19th Festival of Polish Feature Film, the Jury's Special Award for THE LIST OF ADULTERESSES and the award for the dialogues of this film (together with Jerzy Pilch) 1997 - 22nd Festival of Polish Feature Film - The Golden Lions for LOVE STORIES 1998 - The Silver Film, the award of the Association of Italian Film Critics for LOVE STORIES - the best foreign film presented in Italy 1998 - 2nd Prize in the 3rd National Competition for Staging of Shakespeare's Drama's for the staging of THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR in the Folk Theatre in Nowa Huta

Ive seen many of Jerzy Stuhrs films but I have a few favourite. I think I enjoyed Seksmisja most. I havent seen every but in my opinion hes one of the best polish(and not only) actors. I recommend his films and you should see them...
