Wojciech Gawlik, Materiały fotoniczne II, wykł. 2 2010/20116 wg.: http://telecom-fiber.heraeus-quarzglas.com/en/fivestepstothefiber/5Steps.aspx Clean room: fused silica nano-droplets formed by hydrolysis of silicon tetrachloride (SiCl 4 ) inside a hydrogen- oxygen torch. These nanoparticles are then deposited using multiple torches onto a rotating bait tube. This hours-long deposition process results in a chalk-like, nanoporous silica body (known as soot body) weighing nearly 250 kgs The soot body is dried in a dehydration furnace to remove hydroxyl groups created during the deposition process. The soot body is then vitrified into a transparent glass body by means of a large sintering furnace. Wojciech Gawlik, Materiały fotoniczne II, wykł. 2 2010/20117 In tubing draw towers, the high purity synthetic fused silica cylinders are drawn into wave-guide tubes. Wave-guide tubes are separated into two categories: substrate tubes used in the manufacture of core rods (with wall thickness of typically 2 - 3 mm) and thicker wall jacket tubes for single mode and multimode fibers. Jacket tubes are used to overclad core rods making up finished preforms or directly drawn fibers. Production of the core rod material - the chemical vapor deposition process. This process can be done using conventional burners, electrical furnaces, or plasma as the energy source for creating the deposition reaction. The light-guiding region of the core rod is created by the deposition of higher refractive index material on the inner surface of the substrate tube. The higher refractive index is achieved by doping Germanium into the glass matrix. The substrate tube is then collapsed into a rod using high heat and vacuum.

Wojciech Gawlik, Materiały fotoniczne II, wykł. 2 2010/20118 Using the Online RIT (Rod-In-Tube) process, a jacket tube and core rod are simultaneously drawn directly into 125 µm diameter optical fiber in a fiber draw tower. An alternative to the RIT technique, is overcladding the core rod with a large machined cylinder (Online RIC® - Rod-In-Cylinder). This enables customers to produce several thousand kilometers of fiber in a single-step process. The RIC® process sets a new technological standard which results in a highly cost effective method for the production of optical fiber.
