The Armenian Genocide today: the legal and international situation Ludobójstwo Ormian dzisiaj: sytuacja prawna i międzynarodowa

The modern Republic of Turkey against genocide Even today, the Turkish government officially claims that Turkish Armenians were the victims of the epidemic during the evacuation of the front, and its diplomatic representatives to aggressively attack attempts of the commemoration of the victims. March 13, 2005 Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan suggested the Armenian authorities to organize a bilateral commission that would investigate the massacres in the years 1915- 1917. October 10, 2009 Turkey and Armenia established diplomatic relations, the first since the genocide. Under the agreement were to be open boundaries, which have been closed since 1993. This was a result of the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh.

Współczesna Republika Turecka wobec ludobójstwa Nawet dziś rząd Turcji oficjalnie twierdzi, że tureccy Ormianie padli ofiarą epidemii podczas ewakuacji frontu, a jej przedstawicielstwa dyplomatyczne agresywnie atakują próby upamiętnienia ofiar.

Turkey's membership negotiations with the European Union and the issue of genocide This case is one of the difficulties in the future membership of Turkey in the EU, and also the only effective option of "extortion" by the international community to admit to the crime. 12 December 2004, France announced it would not agree to Turkey's membership in the EU if it refuses to acknowledge the genocide. "Armenian problem" is, however, one of the many areas raised by France on the occasion of the accession prospects of Turkey to the EU. The French are most afraid of losing their dominant position in the institutions of the Union, and after the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty, Turkey would have the most votes in the new Council of the European Union. Polish position is unequivocal. Polish parliament clearly and distinctly repeatedly gave signs of its memory, including the form of a resolution of the Sejm. Clearly in the resolution there has been called both the oppressor and the oppressed. Recognition of their historic faults by Turkey is one of the necessary conditions to continue to apply for a place in the structures of the European Union.

International reaction During the massacre, Western countries warned the Turkish government several times, however, they have not taken any concrete steps. In 1939, Adolf Hitler made reference to this in the so-called. Armenian quotation by ordering the attack on Poland: Kill without mercy, women, old people and children; speed is important, and cruelty. Who today remembers the massacre of Armenians? In 2001, Pope John Paul II beatified as a martyr for the faith of the Armenian bishop Ignatius Maloja, who in 1915 after a false accusation of smuggling weapons and refusing to convert to Islam, was murdered.

Recognition for genocide Although the vast majority of historians acknowledge the genocide of the Armenian population, for many years on the crime there was a conspiracy of silence - Turkey was too important ally for the world powers. However, in recent years, successive parliaments adopt resolutions, which state that the slaughter of Armenians was genocide. Until by the now, was officially recognized the Armenian genocide following countries: Argentina, Armenia, Austria, Australia, Belgium, Chile, Cyprus, France, Greece, the Netherlands, Canada, Lebanon, Lithuania, Germany, Poland (19 April 2005. Sejm did this by acclamation ), Russia, Slovakia, Switzerland, Sweden, Uruguay, Wales, the Vatican, Venezuela and Italy, and in 2010 the United States. In addition, on 22 December 2011, the lower house of the French parliament introduced a law providing one year in prison and 45 thousand. Euros fine for any public denial of the Armenian genocide fact in 1915-1917. Among the international bodies recognizeing the Armenian Massacre as the historical fact may be mentioned: the European Parliament (twice: in 1987 and 2004.), The Council of Europe, the UN Sub- Commission. Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities, the International Association of Genocide Scholars, World Council of Churches and the American Union, of Jewish organisations. This fact was also acknowledged during his visit to Armenia by Pope John Paul II.

Do tej pory ludobójstwo Ormian oficjalnie uznały następujące państwa: Argentyna, Armenia, Austria, Australia, Belgia, Chile, Cypr, Francja, Grecja, Holandia, Kanada, Liban, Litwa, Niemcy, Polska (19 kwietnia 2005 r. Sejm dokonał tego poprzez aklamację),Rosja, Słowacja, Szwajcaria, Szwecja, Urugwaj, Walia, Watykan, Wenezuela i Włochy oraz w 2010 roku USA. Ponadto w dniu 22 grudnia 2011 roku izba niższa francuskiego parlamentu wprowadziła prawo przewidujące rok więzienia i 45 tys. euro grzywny za każde publiczne negowanie faktu ludobójstwa Ormian w latach 1915-1917. Spośród ciał międzynarodowych uznających Rzeź Ormian za fakt historyczny wymienić można: Parlament Europejski (dwukrotnie: w 1987 i 2004 r.), Radę Europy, Podkomisję ONZ ds. Zapobiegania Dyskryminacji i Ochrony Mniejszości, Międzynarodowe Stowarzyszenie Badaczy Ludobójstw, Światową Radę Kościołów czy Amerykańską Unię Organizacji Żydowskich. Fakt ten uznał też podczas swojej pielgrzymki do Armenii papież Jan Paweł II.
