The lowest quality is used in perfumes and is mostly synthetic. Foods contain a higher quality of essential oils that has to meet the national food safety standard known as G.R.A.S. (Generally Regarded As Safe). An even higher quality essential oil is used for therapeutic uses. An industry standard permits all essential oils that pass a Gas Chromatograph test can be labeled 100% Pure or Therapeutic Grade. There are 3 problems with the Gas Chromatograph test It does NOT distinguish if the compounds in the essential oil are natural or synthetic. It does NOT measure the proportions of different compounds in the essential oil. It does NOT identify if there are any unwanted compounds contained in the essential oil. doTERRA has every batch of essential oils tested by an independent laboratory with an additional test (Mass Spectrometry) which checks for all 3 of the issues just mentioned. All of doTERRA’s oils pass this test and are labeled Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade (CPTG).
