Jan Heweliusz (in Polish) or Johann Howelcke (in German), born Jan
Jan Heweliusz (in Polish) or Johann Howelcke (in German), born Jan. 28, 1611, died Jan. 28, 1687 in Gdańsk, astronomer who compiled an atlas of the Moon (Selenographia, published 1647) containing one of the earliest detailed maps of its surface as well as names for many of its features. A few of his names for lunar mountains (e.g., the Alps) are still in use, and a lunar crater is named for him. Hevelius also made a catalog of 1564 stars, the most comprehensive of its time, and a celestial atlas in which several constellations, now accepted, were shown for the first time. After his death, the catalog and the atlas were published together (Prodromus Astronomiae, 1690) by his wife, Elisabetha, who had collaborated with him in his observations. A member of a noble family of Gdańsk, Hevelius was a city councillor and a brewer. After studying at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands, he returned to Gdańsk and built an observatory atop his house and equipped it with fine instruments of his own making. Source: . In 1987, the City of Gdańsk established a Prize for the Scientific name of Jan Hevelius. For several years, the prize given in the field of Science, since 2001, the prize is also in the field of the Humanities.
