2 The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (commonly known as the United Kingdom, the UK or Britain) is a sovereign state located off north-western coast of continental Europe. The country includes the island of Great Britain, the north-eastern part of the island of Ireland and many smaller islands. Northern Ireland is the only part of the UK that shares the land border with another sovereign state—the Republic of Ireland. Apart from this land border the UK is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the North Sea, the English Channel and the Irish Sea.

With the population of about 60 million people in mid-2009, it is the third mostly populated island in the world, after Java and Honshū.

In addition to the mainland, Scotland constitutes over 790 islands including the Northern Isles and the Hebrides.

16 Northern Ireland is a part of the United Kingdom in the north-east of the island of Ireland. It shares the border with the Republic of Ireland to the south and west. As of 2001, its population was 1,685,000, constituting about 30% of the island's total population and about 3% of the population of the United Kingdom. Since the signing of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998, Northern Ireland is largely self-governing.
