3 DARWIN Welcome to Darwin The capital of the Northern Territory, Darwin, is a surprising mix of natural beauty, local culture and relaxed living. 12 Miasto, zwane przez Australijczyków po prostu Alice, powstało w 1871 r. jako stacja przekaźnikowa na linii telegraficznej pomiędzy Adelaide a Darwin. Stacja została wybudowana w pobliżu niewysychającego zbiornika wodnego w korycie okresowej rzeki Todd. Nazwa rzeki pochodzi od nazwiska inspektora stacji telegraficznej w Adelaide, Charlesa Todda. Pobliski strumień nosi imię jego żony, Alice.

13 Coober Pedy jest największym w Australii, a może i na całym świecie, ośrodkiem wydobycia opali. Chęć wzbogacenia się na tej szlachetnej krzemionce sprowadziła do miasta przybyszy z całego niemal globu. Dziś mieszkańcy Coober Pedy reprezentują ok. 40 różnych narodowości.
