2 Hi! Im Patrycja. Hi everyone! Im Patrycja Mocza ł a. Im 14 years old and I go to Gimnazjum in Mszana. I would like to tell you something about the wedding traditions in Poland.

4 How it begins… In Silesian District of Poland people before the wedding day celebrate so called Polterabend. On that day neighbours, friends and family change their clothes for very funny clothes. Later all of those people walk to the house of the bride where they're playing different instruments and singing in the street. Everyone brings there small glasses and porcelain dishes. At the end all visitors break the glasses and the bride must clean everything, because it will bring her a lot of luck (according to the saying). Parents of the bride offer visitors Silesian cake and vodka.

5 Now the same in Polish… Przed weselem na Śląsku obchodzi się tzw. Polterabend. Jest to zwyczaj polegający na tym, iż w dzień poprzedzający wesele sąsiedzi, znajomi oraz rodzina przebierają się. Potem wszyscy kolorowym korowodem maszerują przed dom panny młodej, gdzie na ulicy bawią się wesoło. Każdy zabiera ze sobą szklane lub porcelanowe stare naczynia. Zabawę kończą tłuczeniem szkła, które musi posprzątać sama panna młoda, co wedle wierzeń ma jej przynieść wiele szczęścia w życiu mężatki. Rodzice panny młodej częstują przebierańców śląskim kołaczem i wódką.

6 Unchanging past… Today, on the wedding day, all things must be the best and the most wonderful. Future newly-wed start inviting the visitors on the first Sunday from their first church announcement. They do it always together. They go to invite all guests by themselves. One week before the wedding day neighbours and friends of the bride are offered the special wedding cake. Today Silesia's wedding day is not very different from the past times. Like then newly-wed couple is accompanied by a group of the bridesmaid. The best man will assure the beginning of the wedding day till late night. The best man helps the bridegroom (like some years before) to find the bride and later "buy" her, it means give something valuable to get the bride. On the way to church the wedding pageants try to stop the young couple for several times, they wear fancy dresses and want vodka or money to let the couple go. From the church visitors go to a feast, to a wedding party where they're going to dance, eat and drink until the "white morning." At midnight there are so called oczepiny, for that part of the wedding day all maids wait, because catching the wedding veil means that they will get married next year. The next day is a second day of celebrating, again people dance, eat and drink until late hours.

7 Now in Polish again… Na wesele do dzisiejszego dnia przygotowuje się wszystko tak, by było "najpiękniejsze". Przyszli nowożeńcy zaczynają spraszać gości w niedzielę ich pierwszej zapowiedzi. Robią to zawsze razem udając się do każdego kto ma być obecny na ich weselu. Tydzień przed weselem sąsiedzi i znajomi panny młodej obdarowywani są kołaczem weselnym. Dzisiejsze śląskie wesele niewiele różni się od tego sprzed kilkunastu czy kilkudziesięciu lat. Tak jak kiedyś młodej parze towarzyszy grono druhen i drużbów. Zabawianiem gości zajmują się starostowie - funkcję tą pełnią mężczyźni. Pan młody, tak jak kiedyś, musi przy pomocy starosty odszukać pannę młoda, a następnie ją wykupić. W drodze do kościoła korowód weselny jest zatrzymywany po kilka razy przez przebierańców i państwo młodzi musza wykupywać się wódką. Z kościoła goście udają się na ucztę i przy suto zastawionych stołach bawią się do białego rana. O północy odbywają się tzw. o czepiny. Na ten moment wesela z niecierpliwością czekają wszystkie panny, gdyż ta, która chwyci wianek pani młodej, kolejna stanie na ślubnym kobiercu. W drugi dzień odbywają się poprawiny, na których goście weselni bawią się.
